Recommended Aftercare for Body Piercings

Cleaning Solutions:

Packaged Sterile Saline Wound Wash with only 2 ingredients- those ingredients being 9ml/.09% sodium chloride and USP grade or purified water. Any “Piercing Solutions” with any other added ingredients, soaps, peroxide, alcohol, hibiclens, bactine, etc. should be avoided on your piercing.

Cleaning Instructions

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and antibacterial soap prior to handling your piercing.
  • Spray Sterile Saline wound wash directly onto the piercing or let warm water run over the piercing. You can alternate warm water and sterile saline solution.
  • Example: if you shower in the morning, let the warm water run over your piercing and loosen up the crust and then wipe it away with a clean non-woven gauze or Q-tip, and then at night, spray your piercing with sterile saline wound wash and use non-woven gauze or a Q-tip to help wipe away any remaining moisture and crust.
  • Dry thoroughly after every time you shower or clean your piercing. Be sure to only use clean, single-use, products such as Q-tips or non-woven gauze. Avoid cloth towels because they can harbor bacteria.

What Is Normal?

Some swelling, bleeding, bruising, or tenderness is to be expected after you are pierced.

While healing it is normal to see some discoloration, itching, and secretion of a white-yellow fluid that forms a crust around your piercing.

Your piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. This is because this type of wound will heal from the outside to the inside. Although the outside may feel fully healed, the inside may still be fragile and need more time for adequate healing.

What To Do:

  • Leave the piercing alone aside from cleaning. Do not touch your piercing.
  • During healing do not twist, turn, pull, or spin your jewelry.
  • Be careful when getting dressed, working out, sleeping, talking on the phone, etc not to bump or snag your piercing.
  • Make sure your bedding is washed frequently, and wear clean, breathable clothing during the healing process.

What To Avoid:

  • Avoid cleaning with alcohol, peroxide, bactine, hibiclens, or soaps.
  • Also, there is no need for any ointments on your healing piercing.
  • Avoid over-cleaning by only cleaning up to 2 times a day.
  • Try to keep your daily activity levels lower for a few weeks to avoid added irritation to the piercing area.
  • Avoid causing trauma to the piercing by wearing tight clothing that puts pressure on the piercing, excessive motion of the area, playing with the jewelry, or vigorous cleaning. Be gentle.
  • Avoid all oral contact and rough play and contact with any other body fluids (your own sweat is okay) during the duration of your healing.
  • Avoid any bodies of water and refrain from submerging your piercing aside from the shower for at least 3 months after initially being pierced.
  • Avoid all beauty and cosmetic products such as makeup, facial cleansers, moisturizers, etc. on or around your piercing.

Recommended Aftercare for Oral Piercings

Cleaning Solutions:

Alcohol-free mouthwash or warm water only for the inside of the mouth.

Sterile saline wound wash with only 2 ingredients (9ml/.09% sodium chloride and USP Grade or purified water) for external cleaning.

Cleaning Instructions:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap prior to handling your piercing.
  • Keeping up with good oral hygiene practices is important to maintain a healthy mouth and healthy oral piercing.
  • You’ll want to floss, brush your teeth, and use your oral rinse 2 times a day.
  • After eating or smoking, rinse with warm water.
  • For external healing of an oral piercing, you’ll want to allow warm water to run over the piercing allowing the crust to soften, and then wiping it away gently with a Q-tip or non-woven gauze. You can also use sterile saline and alternate it with warm water.
  • Example: if you are showering or washing your face in the morning, allow warm water to run over the piercing and dry thoroughly afterward. At night spray sterile saline wound wash directly onto the external part of your piercing and gently wipe dry with a Q-tip or non-woven gauze.

What Is Normal?

The first week, you may experience swelling, some bleeding, bruising, and tenderness, as well as a white-yellow secretion that creates a crust on your piercing.

After the first week, you may still experience some secretions as well as some minor swelling. Your piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. It will heal from the outside in, and although it may feel fine, it’s possible the inside could still be fragile and need more time for adequate healing.
