My name is Jonathan Kellogg, but many know me as "Jon Dredd". My earliest memories as a child involve creating artwork with friends, and from a young age, I was known to always have a book of my drawings in tow. I found my early art inspiration through my love for comic books, fantasy art, science fiction, and graffiti, which I still credit to the style of work I do today. I may be best known for my large-scale, full-color work, but I also enjoy tattooing many other styles in addition to that. I started tattooing in 1997, and have spent many years since then devoted to improving my personal tattoo techniques and bringing all of my work to the highest levels possible to provide my unique skill set to all of my clients. I love that every project can have a magical reveal when completed, and am always excited to see how happy both my client and I are with the final outcome. The styles of tattoos I am interested in most are "fantasy", "unrealistic realism", "new school", "bio-work", "celestial", "sacred geometry" work, or anything focused on "imagery telling a story", but I am open to many themes for my tattoo projects. When designing a tattoo, I prefer large bold imagery that flows well with the shape of the body that it's placed on, as well as concepts that consist of multiple layers of content that tell a visual story and flow well with the shape of the body.

Jonathan Kellogg, a.k.a. "Jon Dredd", is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning Tattoo Artist, and resident tattooer with us here at Crucial Tattoo Studio in Salisbury, Maryland. He first began his tattoo career in 1997, but has always had a vast interest in everything artistic and was recognized as a creative from a young age by anyone close to him. Having built his artistic foundations early through his love of comic books, fantasy art, science fiction, and graffiti art, Jon was able to use those skills while adapting to his next art love, tattooing.
From the first time Jon saw a tattoo machine running lines through skin he knew this was something he was going to do. He found his way to an apprenticeship under a solid mentor and dropped everything he knew to move out of state to go all in on learning everything he could about tattooing. It wasn't long before that determination was gaining more recognition as people started coming around looking for him by name when they were interested in their next tattoo.
Jon has anchored himself in Salisbury Maryland throughout his tattoo career, first working with Artistic Creations for about a decade before taking the reins on his own tattoo shop, Crucial Tattoo Studio in 2007. His art background has encompassed many art mediums including pencil and color pencil work, pen and ink, paintbrush, air brush, spray paint, and even glass blowing, but he will attest to the fact that the vast majority of his time has been devoted to his continued pursuit of tattoo mastery. All of the art forms he has studied and practiced over the years continue to have an impact on the tattoos he creates today, by providing valuable insight into what aspects will make his tattoos look even better.
Jon's approach to tattooing usually begins with a client's concept or ideas, and a conversational "back and forth" to discuss the goals they both have for the project. Once a main direction is decided on, a more involved discussion pertaining to the details or other options that may come up when designing is necessary. The use of reference images is often helpful in these early stages to get both parties on the same page, and visual examples can aid in speeding the process. After everything is on the table and the discussions have led to a tattoo concept both Jon and his client are excited about, it is time to schedule a time on the books to make this dream a reality. In the time leading up to that appointment, Jon will gather his thoughts on everything that had been discussed through the consultation process, and work to create his vision for this concept as a tattoo. Each tattoo is its own work of art, and each requires a different path to create and bring to fruition, so watching Jon's work can be an experience depending on the project at hand. Whether your project involves a level of detail that requires extensive preparation and stencils to properly apply, or if it requires a flow of design that can only be achieved by drawing directly on the skin by an artist's hand, or even a combination of both, witnessing the process of your tattoos being created in this way can be a unique experience to be a part of.
A quick look through his portfolio can show you the outcome of many of these past experiences, and Jon is eager to learn more about your ideas in hopes of having a future experience with you!
